Ghanbatt 53 receives United Nations medals

The current Ghanaian contingent serving with the UNIFIL in Lebanon, Ghanbatt 53, under the command of Lt-Col Kwame Oppong Otchere, has received UNIFIL peace medals in recognition of service of peace in Lebanon.

The Force Commander, Major-General Seth Kofi Obeng on behalf of the UN Secretary General, Mr Kofi Annan, presented the medals to the soldiers on January 25, 2001 and congratulated the contingent for their dedication to duty and professionalism throughout the operation in South Lebanon.

A statement signed by the Deputy Director of Public Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces, Lt Col E Awuah on Wednesday said UNIFIL Peace Medal is awarded to deserving personnel who have served for at least 90 days during their tour of duty.

Gen. Obeng urged all to give of their best to ensure total peace in Lebanon and thanked Ghana Government for its immeasurable support, the statement added. Present at the ceremony was a six-man delegation from Ghana led by Maj.-Gen.

N.C. Coleman, Commandant of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, the Ghanaian Contingent Commander, Col. A K Abdulai and senior military and civilian personnel of the UNIFIL.
