Goldman Sachs settles race claim

Thu, 4 Dec 1997 Source: --

GOLDMAN SACHS, the US investment bank, has settled a racial discrimination case brought by James Curry, a former employee. The African-American who once earned ?800,000 a year won a claim of racial discrimination against Goldman in July. In a joint statement, Goldman and Mr Curry said the claim had been resolved.

Mr Curry, 43, a graduate of Harvard University, had said he was employed as a "token black" by the investment bank and was fired after complaining to senior partners about racism. The tribunal had heard that Mr Curry's salary fell from ?800,000 in 1993 to ?270,000 in 1994. He was sacked in 1995 when 187 London-based employees were made redundant. Mr Curry now works as a managing director for Merrill Lynch.
