The government, through the Ministry of Works and Housing, is set to receive bids from private investors ready to take up the redevelopment of the stalled Saglemi Housing Project.
The decision to involve private entities is aimed at completing this significant housing initiative intended to address the country's housing deficit which is currently at 1.8 million units.
Although 10 potential developers have shown interest after exploring the ministry's website, formal submissions of bids from these private firms are still pending.
"A couple of months ago, we issued a Request for Proposals (RFP). To date, I have been briefed that about 10 companies, both international and local, have expressed interest, obtained forms, visited the project site, and inspected the work completed so far," the Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, informed journalists outside parliament.
The Saglemi Housing Project, a flagship government initiative designed to provide 5,000 affordable housing units, was scaled back to 1,506 units before being halted due to financial constraints and legal issues.
The abandoned housing project is now reportedly facing vandalism and theft.
However, the current administration is determined to see it through by leveraging private sector expertise and resources.
Sector minister Oppong Nkrumah emphasized the government's commitment to transparency and fairness in the selection process.
"According to the work plan we've developed, by July 8th, we expect to formally receive all bids. We will conduct this process openly and hand over the bids to an independent evaluation entity for a thorough evaluation report. Based on that, the government will proceed to select one of the bidders," he stated.
