A professor at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), Professor Albert Ahenkan, has emphasized the importance of empowering African children through education.

Professor Ahenkan, who is currently the head of the university’s Department of Public Administration, believes that access to quality education is the surest way to prepare African children for success in the 21st century.

He made these remarks while delivering a speech as the keynote speaker on the occasion of the International Day of the African Child organized by the Abibiman Foundation and its partners in Accra.

This year’s International Day of the African Child was held under the theme “Education for all children in Africa: the time is now.”

Professor Ahenkan stated that the commemoration of the day should serve as a reminder for everyone to reaffirm their commitment to the rights and well-being of every African child.

“We need to commit ourselves to the cause of protecting, nurturing, and empowering African children. Let us acknowledge that our children are the heartbeat of our nations and the promise of a brighter tomorrow,” he said.

“Our children are not just our future; they are our present, and it is our duty to ensure that they have the tools, opportunities, and support they need to thrive.”

Highlighting the importance of education for the upliftment of the continent, Professor Ahenkan said, “Education is the cornerstone of a child's development and the foundation of a prosperous society.” He insisted that “an educated child is empowered to dream, innovate, and lead.”

He further urged leaders on the continent to strive to eliminate gender disparities and provide education to children with disabilities, creating a more equitable society where every child can reach their full potential.

Professor Ahenkan also addressed the deplorable state of healthcare in Africa, stating, “We must strengthen our healthcare systems, ensure the availability of essential medicines and vaccines, and provide maternal and child health services. Healthy children are better able to learn, grow, and contribute to their communities.”

Professor Ahenkan concluded his speech by calling for wider engagement and education of both citizens and political stakeholders ahead of the 2024 elections.

“We must educate citizens about the importance of peaceful elections. This includes promoting civic education and encouraging informed participation in the electoral process. Knowledge is power, and an informed electorate is less vulnerable to manipulation and violence,” he added.

Ghana’s leading digital news platform, GhanaWeb, in conjunction with the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, is embarking on an aggressive campaign which is geared towards ensuring that parliament passes comprehensive legislation to guide organ harvesting, organ donation, and organ transplantation in the country.
