Kumasi, April 23, GNA- The Ministry of Women and Children's Affairs (MOWCA) is liaising with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), corporate bodies and other identifiable groups committed to women and children's affairs to intensify education on the review of obsolete cultural practices.

Mrs Gladys Asmah, the sector Minister, who announced this, regretted that in spite of government's efforts at getting women treated fairly, women were still marginalized.

These were contained in a speech read for her at a day's conference for women organised by the Calvary Foundation Incorporated (CFI), a Christian NGO in Kumasi on Friday.

The conference has as its theme: "Upholding The Dignity And Integrity Of The Female Gender" and was aimed at sensitising the participants most of whom were from second and tertiary institutions in Kumasi.

Mrs Asmah said obsolete customary practices did not only hinder women's development but also thwarted government's efforts at ensuring gender equity on developmental issues.

"Parents should also ensure that equal opportunities are given to girls and boys in education and training".

She further called on traditional rulers to organise forums in their areas to talk about all discriminatory laws against women.

Mr Stephen Owusu, President of CFI, expressed the hope that with the proliferation of NGOs committed to women and children's affairs, most of the obsolete cultural practices that marginalized women and children would be addressed.
