Nyantakyi wants Multimedia to sack popular journalist Countryman Songo
Ghana Football Association President Kwesi Nyantakyi has suggested celebrated radio broadcaster Countryman Songo is a liability to media firm Multimedia Ghana and has called on the company to kick him out.
Nyantakyi, a three-termed Ghana FA President, has sued the company and the journalist and wants damages to the tune of $2 million.
Nyantakyi, also CAF’s First Vice President, claims Songo has made unsubstantiated claims of corruption against his personality and is in court for image redemption.
Songo, one of Ghana’s leading journalists, hosts a syndicated TV show on Adom FM, Asempa FM, Adom TV and other affiliates across the West African country.
The show dubbed ‘Fire For Fire’ has won multiple awards in Ghana and is credited for keeping underperforming sports officials on their feet while exposing, naming and shaming corrupt officials.
Nyantakyi feels Songo has attacked his personality and resorted to the law court to seek compensation.
The FA President, who is also a lawyer and a banker, claims a delegation from Multimedia visited him to seek an out of court settlement.
While the issue is still pending before a competent court of jurisdiction Nyantakyi has publicly called on Multimedia to fire the ace journalist who is loved nationwide for his boldness and courageous way of speaking the truth.
“How much is their turnover in a year that a journalist is going to cause them $2m? If I was a media owner I won’t retain such a journalist because he is going to cost the company,” he told Accra-based Neat FM.
Various media reports claim Songo could make a switch to newly established Zylofon FM.
The current FA, led by Nyantakyi, has a huge image crisis and has scored below average mark on transparency.
Many people in Ghana believe the Ghana FA is a corrupt institution. While a wider majority believe that the Association needs a new leadership with former Vice President of the Association George Afriyie widely favoured for the role.
