Regulatory body key to enforcement of the Rent Act – Ahi

The Deputy Minister in charge of Housing at the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Samson Ahi says lack of structural or no regulatory body monitoring the demands of the Rent Act is stifling growth in the housing sector.

He’s underscored the need for the system to have authorities that will help in the strict enforcement of the housing laws.

There is currently a bill before parliament that seeks to amend the Rent Act, Act 220, 1963 to address the shortcomings in rental issues, especially high charges in rent advance and a complete overhaul of the housing system in the country .

The review of the Act, will prohibit Landlords from demanding rent advances of more than six months.

Commenting on the bill on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.3 FM Monday, Mr Ahi said both tenants and landlords must embrace the laws to perfect standards, as well as rid the system of prohibitive housing costs in the sector.

According to him, the prevailing housing deficit has created a gap in the system and makes it easier for landlords to take undue advantage of poor tenants, hence the need for government to consolidate housing policies and bridge the gap.

“We’re proposing to set a housing fund that will help support the housing industry. If the Banks will get a long term investment support it will make the system relaxed in securing loans for a boost in affordable housing.

“Making home ownership attainable is essential, at least for a young Ghanaian worker there should the opportunity to have access to mortgage facility in the system.”
