**** Accra, (Greater Accra) 6 Oct., The People's Convention Party (PCP) today said it still stands by its call on government to set up a committee of enquiry to look into the loss of 270 million cedis to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) through an agreement with Union Electrik (Nigeria) Limited for the rehabilitation of burnt transformers. "We firmly stand by our call on government to set up a Committee of Enquiry into circumstances leading to the loss of 270 million cedis by the ECG," a statement issued in Accra said. The statement, signed by Mr. Kwesi Pratt, acting General Secretary, referred to ECG's explanation and said there is no justification to give Union Electrik 270 million cedis as mobilization cost when it had done no rpt no work. According to the ECG, it contracted Union Electrik to rehabilitate 44 burnt transformers and paid half the cost as part of the contract. But the Nigerian company has failed to fulfil its part of the deal. Instead, it is asking for more money. The PCP said it found the ECG explanation unsatisfactory and demand that the government take steps to ensure that the money is retrieved and the management of ECG made to explain the procedures involved in the contract. The party suspects that the contract was not awarded in a transparent manner and that the loss of the money was due to recklessness on the part of the management of ECG. "The PCP is of the view that the mere despatch of two engineers to Nigeria to inspect the facilities of Union Electrik does not constitute diligent work to secure the interest of the people of Ghana."
