The Information Technology (IT) Department of Sikkim Manipal University Learning Centre (SMU Ghana) has organized a workshop on “IEEE Circuits and Systems Society - Adaptive Filter Theory”.
A press release signed by Abhishek Tagyi, Dean of the University, and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said the one-day workshop took place at the Academic City campus of SMU Ghana, under the auspices of IEEE, the world's largest technical society and international non-profit, professional organization for the advancement of technology.
It was meant to equip participants with the technical knowledge required by IT professionals in the area of circuit and systems design and to acquaint participants with research accomplishments and development approaches provided by researchers from academia and industry in the areas of information technology, computer programming, algorithms, circuits and system society.
In the first of the two-session programme, Professor Tokunbo Ogunfunmi, Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development at the School of Engineering at Santa Clara University, California, USA, who chaired the programme, engaged participants in discussions on a variety of issues including how adaptive filtering techniques are used in a wide range of applications, including echo cancellation, adaptive equalization, adaptive noise cancellation, and adaptive beam-forming.
In the second session, Professor Ogunfunmi, who, in addition to having two published books and more than 130 refereed books to his credit in the area of focus of the workshop and is also the Director of the Signal Processing Research Lab (SPRL) at the Department of Electrical Engineering at Santa Clara University, focused the attention of participants on underlying principles behind adaptive filters and provided a comprehensive introduction to the area of both linear and non-linear adaptive filter theories.
In an address which threw more light on the activities of IEEE, the Ghana Section Chairman of IEEE, Mr. George Eduful, highlighted the benefits of IEEE membership to students in information and communication technology, and electrical and electronics studies.
The Dean of SMU Ghana, Dr. Abhishek Tyagi, commended the IT Department of SMU Ghana for organizing the programme and urged students to register with IEEE in order to benefit from the large volume of exposure the organization gives its members through seminars, workshops and international conferences.
At the end of the program, the Co-Chairman of the sessions, Mr. Gajendra Singh, Director of Academics of SMU Ghana, expressed appreciation for the knowledge imparted to participants who were largely students of SMU.
Mr. Kamal Kant Hiran, Head of Department of IT, SMU Ghana, who is also IEEE Ghana Technical & Professional Activities Coordinator, expressed the hope that more of such specialized technical programmes and activities will be organized for students in tertiary institutions in Ghana.
