Ghanaian skit maker and comedian, SDK Dele, has advocated for a 10 years prison remand for the 11 companies that have been issued mining licenses recently.

According to the skit maker, his expectation is that culprits be apprehended and remanded the same way protesters were arrested and remanded.

He said, "I just heard that they have issued 11 licenses for people to do galamsey right now. My expectation is that they catch them. The same way they caught the citizens that were protesting freely. They should do the same thing to them.”

He made this statement on October 5, the third day of the #StopGalamsey# and #FreeTheCitizens# demonstration in a video shared on X by JoyNews.

SDK further said, “Those people doing the galamsey, they shouldn’t give them two weeks, at least ten years. By the time they will be back the water will be clean. When they see that the water is clean, they will realise that they were being foolish. Sorry for my language.”

The #FreeTheCitizens and #SayNoToGalamsey protest, a three-day event organized by the Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey, aimed at demanding the release of some protesters who were arrested in a previous demonstration for breaching protest laws.

Another goal of the protest was to shed light on the dangerous effects of illegal mining on Ghana’s environment and water bodies and to demand immediate action to address the issue.

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, during an interview on TV3’s Key Points on October 5, 2024, alleged that 11 new licenses were issued on October 3, 2024, the exact day that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo met with the Organised Labour to have a discussion about the organisations planned demonstration on galamsey issues.
