Akim Oda (Eastern Region), 13, Chain saw operations will be banned when the new timber rights law comes into force this year, Mr. Cletus Avoka Minister of Lands and Forestry has said. He said illegal chain saw operators are not only depleting the forest at an alarming rate but some of them have armed themselves to the teeth and attack forestry guards who challenge them. Mr. Avoka was on a familiarisation tour of Cuppon Wood Processing, Birim Wood Complex and Oda Sawmills, all timber firms in Akim Oda.. He urged the timber firms to feed the local market with at least 20 to 30 per cent of their produce. This will not only ensure regular supply of timber products to local consumers but will also help eliminate the activities of illegal chain saw operators. Mr. Avoka said the Eastern Region ranks first in illegal chain saw operations and called for co-operation from the police and the courts to address the issue.
