Accra, May 4, GNA - Police on Friday said they were attacked by a mob with stones and other offensive weapons at James Town during the installation of a new Gbese Mantse of the Ga Mashie people of the Ga state.

Mr Douglas Akrofi-Asiedu, Greater Accra Regional Police Commander told the Ghana News Agency in a telephone interview this evening; "The Police were attacked with stones and other offensive weapons while going about their normal duties of maintaining law and order".

He said; "we used tear gas and rubber bullets to restore order which is a constitutional mandate of the Police in such eventualities". Mr Akrofi-Asiedu denied any reported incidents of deaths as at the time of this interview but said that two Police officers were injured as a result of the rioting, while three Police cars were damaged as well. He said, the Police as law enforcement agents have the right whatsoever to use all means to restore order in cases of chaos and disturbances.

He advised that any party that has any misgivings should use the traditional courts rather than mob action in their demands.
