The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is demanding investigations into how a “drug baron” won the contract to provide security at the country’s international airport.
Mr Solomon Adelaquaye, head of Sohin Security was until his arrest head of security at the Kotoka International Airport.
He was arrested together with three others for conspiring to import heroin into the United States.
The opposition party is convinced Adelaquaye won the contract to provide security at the airport due largely to his connections with members of the ruling government and the national security and not because he is competent to do the job.
The party claims Adelaquaye and his security company had no track record at all in providing security and wondered how they won the bid.
In a statement signed by the party's General Secretary Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, the party called for a full scale investigation into how Sohin Security won the bid to provide security at the airport.
The party is alleging that prior to the arrest of Adelaquaye, he was conspiring to import 3,000 kilograms of cocaine into Ghana from the US, and subsequently export it to Asia.
“The shipment of some 3,000 kilograms of cocaine into Ghana by Mr Adelaquaye and his accomplices goes to prove the fears of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, who expressed fears that some members of his government may be complicit in the drug trade.
“President Mahama, as a sign of determination to fighting the drug menace, must immediately institute a public inquiry and investigate the mode surrounding the award of the security contract at the Kotoka International Airport to Sohin Security, as well as its operations at the airport over the years,” the statement said.
