Transport operators at Enchi, the district capital of Aowin Suaman in the Western Region, are anxiously appealing to the District Assembly and other relevant stakeholders to fast-track the construction of a proposed bus terminal in the town.
A parcel of land adjacent the Enchi market, which has been earmarked for the construction of the terminal, has been left abandoned and faces the danger of being encroached by private developers.
In the absence of the terminal, transport operators have to make do with two existing terminals that can only accommodate about 66 and 83 vehicles respectively. This situation compels some drivers to operate from roadsides.
The two terminals are not only small but also lack basic facilities as a transport terminal of a district capital, irrespective of the quantum of revenue the Assembly gets through tolls at the stations.
The floors are not tarred, making the places muddy for vehicular and human movement whenever it rains. There are no sheds for waiting travellers and no sanitary facilities.
Considering the role of the town in the economy of the Aowin Suaman district, a well-functioning transport terminal would enhance the socio-economic development of the district.
With agriculture as the dominant economic activity in the district, the district capital serves as the main transit point for farmers and traders from the length and breadth of the country to do business.
It is against this backdrop that transport operators, with the support of the BUSAC Fund, are calling on the District Assembly and other stakeholders to expedite action on the construction of the new terminal.
