The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system which began on Monday September 27 has been halted.

According to Starr News sources, the move is to enable government perfect the registration and insurance of the buses before they are allowed on the road again.

Nine of the BRT buses deployed to ply to the Amasaman – Achimota – Circle – Tudu route to serve hundreds of commuters for free from Monday to Friday, as part of test operations of the service were not insured and registered.

Roland Bruce, Marketing and Communications Manager of the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive, operators of the service confirmed on an Accra based radio station that the buses being used for test operations of the BRT services are yet to be registered and insured but added that they will be insured by the end of the week.

Drivers and supervisors who were at the Achimota depot of the BRT were disappointed to know they won't work today as anticipated according to Starr News reporter Daniel Lartey.

The piloting of the Bus Rapid Transport service was characterized by low patronage after majority of commuters within the catchment area missed Monday morning's free ride due to poor publicity on the project.
