  I'd have loved to sympathise with these illegal miners in South Africa for the simple fact that the situation there is different - the miners go deep, deep down in abandoned official mines sites where no damage is done to the environment, unlike in our case here in Ghana. But I'm afraid I don't have any sympathy for them (the miners) because that is how it all starts - that's how it all started in Ghana - an "innocent" illegal mining to what we have now.

  African governments need to make sure that the people, not Western businesses, benefit from the minerals. That way no one will risk life and damage environment to illegally mine. Why are states not mining the minerals, processing and selling them? That would have created legal jobs for everyone.
