  Long before the invention of the gun, religious zealots within Christianity and Islam were raising havoc carrying out crusades in order to forcefully convert others to their faiths. Human beings have failed to use their God-given gift, the power of thinking and reasoning, to understand that it's evil to misuse any instrument or tool to wreck havoc on their fellow humans for misguided reasons or agendas. It makes no sense to wish punishment on the offspring of the inventor, for his offspring had no hand in the invention of that lethal weapon. One just has to look at power wielded by persons in authority. Some evil and insecure persons in authority are prone to using their authority to brutalize or abuse others in varying ways, and it will be wrong to wish punishment on the offspring of these bad actors because of what bad acts their parents might have done against others.
