Political singer, A-plus, known in real life as Kwame Obeng Asare is making ‘heavy weather’ of threats of legal action against him by certain individuals and key politicians who are not happy with his new single hit currently making waves on the music market.The 30-year-old singer boldly told DAILY GUIDE in an interview that although he had stepped on many toes nobody could sue him in a court of law concerning his songs and win.
He said he was always circumspect with his songs as he checked his facts before finally coming out.
“I am the only Ghanaian musician who researches before coming out to do a song. That is why I have been doing political songs since 2001 and I have never been to court. Nobody can win A-plus in court. I am the only musician in Ghana who has loyal fans,” he said.
One of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirants, Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko has registered his displeasure with A-plus’ new song and had threatened to take legal action against him.
In his latest song, A-Plus mentioned that Boakye Agyarko, Arthur Kennedy, Kwame Addo-Kufuor, Mike Oquaye, Papa Owusu-Ankomah and all other NPP flagbearer aspirants as well as the entire country, including Ama Benyiwa Doe of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would be happy if Nana Akufo won the flagbearership of the NPP.
Mr. Boakye Agyarko felt unhappy about the mention of his name in the song, and is therefore asking that his name be dropped from the song.
However, the songster said if he was a one of the candidates and someone said anything like what he said in his song he would not be offended as a he would be happy about a fellow candidate’s victory, to make people see how united their party was.
“I am surprised people got offended when I said when one person wins the others would be happy. Unless this man (Agyarko) can come out and tell me that when Nana wins he would be angry.”
However, A-plus claimed he “listened to Agyarko on many radio stations and the man did not sound angry”, and doubted if he really wanted to go to court.
“Boakye Agyarko would lose if he goes to court to challenge me. In fact, when he goes to court he would lose. As for that one I will say it for a fact,” he stressed.
The hiplife artiste, who considers himself as someone who believes in Ghana first was of the view that he was only using the song to exercise his right of freedom of speech.
Asked if he did the song for Nana Akufo Addo while excising his right, he said he did it for Ghanaians, not Nana.
“I didn’t do the song for Nana. I made it for Ghanaians who are people that I believe are statesmen; People who are leaders, people who have fought for this nation.”
He continued: “If it was about voting for the best candidate to lead the NPP, it is Akufo Addo. If it is for the Convention People’s Party (CPP) it is Prof. Agyeman Badu Akosa, with Atta Mills for the NDC.”
Re-emphasizing his position, he said “it is not that I am doing a song for Akufo Addo; I have done the song to tell all Ghanaians that anybody that you elect as a flagbearer is a potential president and therefore they should elect the best or the right people.”
A-plus further stated that throughout his life he had only met Nana Akufo Addo once and that mentioning his name in his songs including previous ones was because he felt he was one of the great people who laid down their lives for Mother Ghana for a very long time as far as politics was concerned.
He as well mentioned Ama Benyiwa Doe, Kwasi Pratt, Kweku Baako Jnr., Professor Agyekum and Kofi Koomson as some of the people who had also contributed to Ghanaian politics.
