Allo TiGO: Not just for fun

Jon Germain has handled Metro TV’s Allo Tigo for quite some time now and he isn’t doing badly at all. It is interesting to watch him do his thing on the program because that is what I know he is good at but then is it all about entertainment and fun without any education?

The show comes off in the afternoon every Saturday or so with Jon interviewing showbiz personalities and talks about lifestyles and more music.

That reminds me of the days when he handled Smash TV on that same network. I love the studio setting and DJ Benti in one corner with his machines, mixing good music of the guest artists invited into the for interviews. I also love Jon’s line of questioning and the relaxed atmosphere he creates for his studio guests. In short, the program “dey beee like something”.

I watched an episode a few days ago and I thought something was not right somewhere. Jon brought in Ohemaa Mercy and Shasha Marley and I was thrilled by the latter’s comments on the show. Shasha’s story about how he composed and released his latest album which had the track “Boom Boom Wah Wah”, was just interesting.

So interesting one is tempted to think that the musician is a good story teller who just made up something for the sake of publicity, but who am I to say that. Anyway, that wasn’t what I saw as “not right” about the show. It was an issue which Jon brushed off with ease though I thought he shouldn’t have done that.

He invited certain ladies into the studio to talk about their taste of guys and the feeling they have when guys admire them.

In the first place I thought this was just out of place and should not have happened on his show but then as I listened to the stories of some of the ladies, I sensed something serious going on in the country which needs particular attention by those concerned.

Two of the ladies said they had been sexually attractive to the same sex. Thus, one of them testified of how she had been harassed by another female she just met at a restaurant or so just because the latter thought she looked attractive and sexually appealing and wanted to befriend her based on that.

Another lady said her friend told her how another lady tried to avoid her just because she might be tempted to have sexual affairs with her due to her attractiveness. Do you sense what I am sensing? Yes, the issue of gay…you know, homosexual and lesbian behavior; It is becoming rampant in our part of the world.

Jon Germain could have probed further to get the whole truth of the matter but he just brushed it aside and went on with his line of questioning which I found less relevant.

This gay thing is an issue that has sparked up controversies in the country and for the sake of morality, it has not been legalized. But there are people out there who are seriously developing the guts to think about it and even do it in the open without fear of expressing their feelings for the same sex.

Jon should have taken time to make his viewers aware that these were real things happening in this country and need to be addressed. I am not saying he should have condemned it but then he should have used his medium to inform and educate the public on the rise of such behaviors among us and the need for a solution.

Soon, gay activists may take to the streets again and then we would see the seriousness of the issue.

Allo Tigo is just another program which brews out issues of national interest and this is not a show just meant for fun and Jon needs to address the issues as and when they come in.

I am strongly against gay relationships and the government has proved its intolerance for it too but if such things still exist with us, it is worth talking about to see how best we can quench it for good. It was an odd issue in the studios of Allo Tigo and Jon treated it with ease to my dislike.

I have said my own, if we don’t tolerate it, we shouldn’t treat it with kid’s gloves when it raises its ugly head.
