Mamfe-Akuapem (E/R), Dec. 24, GNA - The Chiefs and people of Akuapem-Mamfe at the weekend celebrated their annual "Asafosa" festival or the festival of communal drinking. The festival, started over 400 years ago is to bring peace and unity to the Mamfe community.
During the celebration, the various traditional houses in the community and visiting chiefs bring pots of palm wine each, which is mixed together and redistributed for mass drinking to signify trust, peace and unity.
Speaking at a durbar of chiefs and people of Mamfe-Akuapem to mark this year's celebrations, Osabarima Ansa Sasraku, Mamfihene, called on his people to help plan toward the development of the township. Osabarima Sasraku announced that the Guinness Group of Companies has promised to help drill boreholes in the community to solve the water problem.
He said this year's, Ohum festival would be held on Friday, December 26, 2008 instead of the usual Saturday, because of the elections on Sunday December 28.
Osabarima Sasraku said the wives of chiefs in the area would hold a party for men and women above the age of 70 years in the Mamfe community, on Christmas Day at the Mamfe Presbyterian School. He said on the same day, the youth would organize a float from Obosomase to Apiredi on the Akuapem ridge, and MTN would sponsor a street carnival on December 26 and a football gala on December 27. 24 Dec. 08
