New Gospel artistes keep emerging from Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, and most of them become instant hits with their first albums.
The Garden city of Ghana seems to be nurturing a large crop of potential stars in the likes of Kwaku Gyasi, Esther Smith, Florence Obinim and Christiana Love to mention a few.
Currently, a new artiste who has emerged on the scene with an album titled Boa Me is 18 year old Deborah Antwiwaa, a younger sister of the ace gospel musician, Christiana Love.
A native of New Suame in Kumasi, Deborah said that music actually runs in their family and that it is not surprising for her to release her debut at such a tender age.
Being the fourth in a family of nine children, Deborah’s father, Kwasi Twene, was a very popular musician in his early years and all her older siblings including Christiana Love are into music.
Deborah started singing at the age of five under the tutelage of one Pastor Banahene and ministered at various functions both in and outside the Ashanti Region until she had to break her musical activities to begin her education.
“ I had to quit singing because my schooling did not give me the chance to continue.” said the Senior Secondary School leaver.
According to Christiana Love, who also featured on Deborah’s album, she knew of her sister’s talent from childhood and decided to help her enter the limelight.
Based on this decision, Deborah was brought to Accra where Christiana and her husband and producer, Rev. Love Hammond were based to work on this album.
Ironically, Deborah had always been hailed as the more talented singer of the two though both were singing under Pastor Banahene.
However, Christiana Love joined a group called Hallelujah Chorus after Junior Secondary School and sung with them until she met Osuani Akatakyie Afrifa who wrote the songs of her first album making her an instant success in 2002. “ I believe this is God’s plan for the two of us.
Maybe God wanted me to come out first so that I could help my younger sister to fully exploit her talent.” Christiana told Showbiz.
Deborah Antwiwaa’s Boa Me is a ten-track album. The album opens with Boa Me which uses a fusion of reggae and jama beats at a mid tempo pace.
Deborah’s voice which opens the song sounds like that of Christiana Love except that she sings at a higher pitch. Boa Me, which features Christiana Love, is a meditative song and calls on Jesus to come to the aid of a troubled person.
The organ interlude makes the instrumentation exceptionally good. A praise song sang in gratitude to God for making her dreams come true is Ebebamu.
For her, to realise a dream of having her own album from age five is a big fulfillment in her life and no other than God has done it.
This song takes the jama beat with the refrain of “Roro Roro” beautifully intercepting it. The song stresses that though humans are bound to disappoint, God will never fail in fulfilling his promises for our lives.
Another good jama praise song on the album is Nyame ye odo. In this song, just like the others, Christiana Love’s voice can audibly be heard among the backing vocals.
Debora sings of the fact that no matter how wretched and big her problems are, God still loves her because He is love. Listening to this song would make one conclude that the two sisters make a melodious pair.
Meyi Woaye matches the rhythm which is the usual fast paced jama beat. Significantly, all the songs on this album with the exception of Boa Me, are praise songs either of God’s qualities or in gratitude for what God has done for her.
Other songs on the album are Ne Do Ye Soronko, W’ahye me enimonyam and the cool tempo worship versions of Boa Me and Ebebamu.
Deborah who came to Accra during her second year at the Adventist Day Secondary School at Bantaman, Kumasi, hopes to either further her education or learn hair dressing.
Either ways she has decided to stay in music for good and become a household name like her sister Christiana Love whose next album titled Ewurade Akai Me is due in February.
All songs on the Boa me album were written and produced by Rev. Love Hammond. He is also the brain behind Christiana Love’s hit song Bra beko mame.
