Last week as an invited guest I attended the ?Fe Fe Ne Feh? jump off in Toronto, Canada. To outsiders this appeared to be another excuse for Toronto?s elite, the young and fabulous, in other words, to come out and go wild, but to my surprise, it was a benefit with the aim of raising money for an orphanage in Ghana.
The idea behind the benefit was very thoughtful because it is not everyday that I find young people taking an interest in matters not directly dealing with their own lives. It is true that many people talk about the problems that our people back home face everyday but very few are willing to do anything about it.
The event was organized by a Toronto student, Nancy Asante who is known to her friends as ?Ama Sika?. She states that she first came across an article about the Teshie Orphanage on myananse.com and upon her visit to Ghana in 2005; she paid a visit to the orphanage.
Nancy became so distraught over the conditions in which many young children had to live in and made a vow to do whatever she could to aid the suffering of the children she found in the orphanages.
Upon her return to Canada, she did some more research about the orphanage by contacting the representatives of the myananse.com and finally came up with the idea to have a fundraiser in the name of Teshie Orphanage in Accra, Ghana.
At the end of the night, she was able to raise an outstanding amount of money to buy food and supplies for the orphanage. Thanks to this angel, who decided to take time out of her life to organize this event, the orphanage will not have to worry about food, at least for a while. It was remarkable the amount of people within the Ghanaian community in Toronto who came out to show their love and support.
There was also support from various artists in Ghana, especially Tic Tac, who not only provided emotional support but made helpful contributions to the initial planning of the event, even giving her permission to use the title of his song ?Fe Fe Ne Feh?. All in all, the event turned out to be a night to remember.
