On Tuesday July 8, 2008, Ohenmaa Mercy was honoured at this year’s National Honours Awards, held at the International Conference Centre. About 244 Ghanaians were honoured in various categories for contributing to the development of Ghana.
Among the award winners for music and entertainment were Ohenmaa Mercy. She came onto the scene not long ago but has won the hearts of most Ghanaians with her beautiful album entitled “edin Jesus” and the hit track which is enjoying a lot of air play and sales, “wadwen”.
Some Ghanaians didn’t understand why some people were honoured and what exactly their contribution was to national development that made them deserving of the award; Ohenmaa Mercy was one of the artists cited by critics.
She granted Adom FM in Tema an interview on the “Gospel Chat Show” about the award given her at the just ended National Honours Awards. Asked how she felt about it, she said, “I’m so happy with it and thank God so much for this award and my husband and entire family for their support.”
She later said her song was to inspire people who were lost in the world and give them the hope that there is Jesus Christ who died for our sins and gave us the hope to move on in life. She revealed that after the awards, when she got home she called her family and prayed to thank God for the honour He bestowed on her.
Asked again whether she shares the view that she didn’t deserve the award given her, she answered, “I see nothing wrong with the award I have been given, it’s not just an award given me but the good timing of God. Maybe people didn’t understand what God did.” She supported this by reading from Ecclesiastes 9:11.
Aside the national honour, she is also enjoying a lot of radio airplay and sales on the market. The album is currently second on the SGC show on Radio Gold 90.5FM after being at the number one spot for almost seven weeks running.
Other gospel artists honoured include Amy Newman, Elder Mireku, Christiana Love, Cindy Thompson, Grace Ashy and Diana Hopeson.
