Guilty Or Not Guilty: Ekow Micah faces judgment on Nov. 30

After three months of litigation, an Accra Circuit Court has set Monday, November 30, 2015 to deliver its judgement on the case in which popular reggae musician Lester Ekow Micah is standing trial on allegation of procession of narcotics.

The court presided over by Aboagye Tandoh decided on the ‘judgement day’ after hearing the evidence of one Lily Okyere, sister of the musician.

Led in evidence by the defence lawyer, Andrew Kudzo Vortia, Lily said two hours before police officers led her brother to the house, a fair coloured man visited their house looking for the accused.

She said when the visitor was told that Ekow was not at home, the visitor offered to wait and gave her 20 pesewas to buy water for him but when she returned with the water, the visitor was nowhere to be found.

According to Lily, who was positive that the said narcotic substance was placed in their house by the “mysterious visitor”, she met the visitor in front of their gate, stressing that he said he would no longer wait for Ekow.

The witness stated that two hours later her brother was ushered into their house by policemen, one of whom went straight to the exact place the visitor had sat.

She said the police officer picked a black polythene bag and asked her what it was but she did not know.

Lily further told the court that the policemen also picked some Compact Discs (CDs) and a pen drive from the room of her brother.

In cross examination, the prosecutor, ACP Moses Atibilla, among other things, wondered if Ekow did not call her sister when he was arrested, a question Lily answered in the negative.

The defence witness denied assertions from the prosecution that the substance was for Ekow because it was found in the corridor of their house.

The trial judge however said both parties had up till November 27 to file their addresses if they so wish to do so or he would go ahead with his judgement.

The musician of “Me Si Wo Hemaa” fame last Wednesday mounted a spirited defence in the trial after an attempt to stay the trial had been thrown out.

He said he was being held by the police over the charges because he was a Rastafarian.

He said he never told the police that he used the substance purportedly found in his residence by the police to “ginger” himself in his music career.

The reggae musician said that at no time had he used wee, insisting that the said narcotic substance was not found in his room.

Ekow was on August 4 arrested by the Airport Police over an alleged extortion case currently before another Circuit Court.

The prosecution alleged that the following day at about 11:30 am, the Police and the accused person visited Micah’s house to conduct a search and in the process, dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp were found in Micah’s bag.
