Owoahene Nana Acheampong, the lover boy is the choice when we talk of highlife sounds in the country. Beginning music at his early age with Daddy Lumba, a friend he met in a German neighborhood as Lumba Brothers, they recorded their maiden album in 1988 with ?yereye aka akwantuo mu? as the title.
Their next and last duo album was ?Obi ato me so boo? and they went solo after something cropped up between them. In the past 16 years, Nana has produced 16 albums with the first 6 recorded in Germany and the rest in his own Owoahene studio in Suame, a suburb of Kumasi.
In 1996, his album ?nanka ebeye den na aye wo ya? sold over 1.3million copies, a level no Ghanaian musician has ever reached and declares that that particular album is still selling 3million and over.
He has six honors from his performance and due to how he want to maintain that level, Nana has in recent times adopt a way to please all highlife and hiplife fans and thus blends his style with high and hip life.
On his latest ?Casanova? album, he has a song featuring Sydney and the title is ?Me soo dae bi?. That song is a new type of song named by this artiste as ?sikyi hi - hip music?.
In an interview with him at his residence in Kumasi, he promised to release this particular type of song in his coming albums. He featured other artistes including Screw Face, O D 4 and Malisa.
Shee and Maggie are behind his vocals. In terms of management across this country, he mentioned the name GABBY and MARIA as his local producer and manager whose efforts are lots to write about. He came to the country not quite long ago with the purpose of recording his 17th album and to also host some concerts during the Easter festivities and more.
On the 21st this month, Nana would host a show at the Accra National Theatre with Charles Amoah, George Darko and Daddy Lumba and in Kumasi on the 28th he explained that this program would show how Burger highlife began and the pioneers behind it. On 5th may he would be in Tarkwa Prestea for another show and to Takoradi before he finally leave the country.
It might be interesting to note that Owoahene introduced his 17 years old son Leroy in Germany to do music at his tender age of 7 but has noted that the boy is really into music and so he is not expecting that much from him in the industry.
He announces through the Weekly Fylla that his fans should watch out for 16 more albums and I quote him ?until you write and sing no more, there is no retirement in music as a career.
