Ace hiplife artiste, Michael Elliot Kwabena Okyere Darko, known in showbiz as Obrafour, has disclosed he coined the popular term ‘Kasahare’ – the local name given to rap music in Ghana.
Kasahare in the local parlance means ‘fast talk’.
The Yaanom hit maker revealed he was the originator of the term on the Class Drive with Prince Benjamin on Class91.3FM.
“Kasahare is a word I coined,” he said, while playing the ‘Inner-View’ game show, a segment on the Class Drive.
According to the award-winning rapper, he first came up with the term on his debut album 'Pae Mu Ka'.
Explaining how he coined the term, Obrafour said: “I play with words, sometimes I do try to make up my own words and that’s how come I got it. I was trying to understand how rap will be called in the Twi [language]. I realised rap is like fast-talking, so I said why not call it ‘kasahare’.”
The terminology, Kasahare, has come to be widely accepted especially by the youth as the traditional name for rap music in Ghana.
Asked to choose his favourite rappers in the country at the moment, Obrafour said exempting Reggie Rockson, his favourites are: Sarkodie, M.anifest, Kofi Kinaata, Okyeame Kwame, E.L. and Tee Flow.
Obrafour has been in the music industry for close to two decades with several albums and awards to his credit and he is widely respected by his peers because of his composed nature.
