According to President John Mahama, the influx of Nigerian music serves as an inspiration for local acts to inject more efforts in their music.

“I think Ghanaians are taking our music there. There has been an influx of Nigerian music but I think it’s the same West African tradition.

Competition is good so when Nigerian music comes in, it kind of inspires and encourages our own artistes to also up their game,” he said in an interview with Uniiq FM in Accra.

The president however advised that a balance be struck between the rate at which radio stations play local songs and foreign songs.

“We must aim for a fair balance in terms of foreign music and local music. I don’t think we should overplay foreign music at the expense of our local music. But I know there is a broadcasting bill coming up which will specify what level of local content must receive airplay on our local radio stations,” he stated.

Many local acts and music lovers have vehemently criticised the rate at which foreign songs are given rotation on local radio and television stations.

The practice, some have argued, kills talents which goes a long way to affect the music industry in the country.
