Drunken driver in double agony

Accra (Greater Accra), 15 March '99 - A driver who allegedly flouted traffic regulations and nearly knocked down a police woman enforcing the new one-way traffic movement on the Kwame Nkrumah avenue and Kojo Thompson roads in Accra was on, Saturday placed in police cell. Isaac Wemegah, 38, driver of cargo truck whose alcohol level registered 0.20 against the legal limit of 0.02 is to appear in court today. Wemegah, was ''dragged'' to the office of Mr Mustapha Garbah, Commander of the Motor Traffic Unit, by some police personnel who apprehended him failing to stop when he was found driving in the inner lane of the Kwame Nkrumah Avenue towards the Kwame Nkrumah circle, which is now service lane reserved for cars only. In his bid to escape arrest, Wemegah nearly run into a policewoman on duty. Other policemen on duty arrested him when the traffic light ''caught him'' at the junction of the Central Police Station Mr Garbah ordered that the alcohol level of Wemegah, should be taken in the presence of reporters who had gone there to find out about the implementation of the new traffic arrangement in the city.
