"Music Not For Weaker Students"

The Head of the Department of Music at the University of Education, Winneba, Dr. Cosmos W.K. Mereku, has debunked the perception that weaker students pursue music.

Rather, he said, music was one of the most difficult subjects and research had proved that those who read music had very sharp brains and were great thinkers. Dr. Mereku was speaking at the University’s Lunch Time Concert programme, a platform given to the students to exhibit their skills on what they have learnt for the students to appreciate.

Dr Mereku advised Ghanaian Musicians to research and infuse the country’s culture with the foreign ones in the lyrics of their music, stressing that there must be a blend of the indigenous African and foreign traditions. Dr Mereku expressed disappointment with the lyrics of some musicians and reminded them that music had a role in nation-building. They must, therefore, ensure that their music carried messages that would have a positive impact on national development.

He cautioned musicians not to let monetary gain over ride their image and reputation, adding that they should not produce music which could corrupt the youth and create an undisciplined society. Dr Mereku commended the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, for his support for the Music Department.

He mentioned the replacement of worn-out instruments as one of the major challenges facing the Department but expressed the hope that the vice-chancellor and the Chancellor, Alhaji Dr Asuma Abu Banda, would help to find a solution to the problem.
