As gospel music grows there seem to be several variations coming out of the traditional style. There have been, over the years, gospel highlife, gospel reggae, gospel hiplife, gospel R&B, among others.
Each of the musicians choose to present their message in the style they desire or, that which the Holy Spirit leads them to.
Ebi Mensah is a gospel musician who is out with her maiden gospel album. The collection of the songs on the album represents very rich western music genres varying from R&B to country.
The London based musician titled her CD album ?My Yoke is Easy? and has eight inspiration songs on it. Her aim in releasing this album, she told Showbiz, was to ?reach out to the world to let people know that no matter who they are Jesus is there for them.?
The title song ?My Yoke I Easy? is a great rendition in the R&B vein; one could confuse the beginning with Cece Winans and Whitney Houston?s Count on Me but as one listens along one realizes that it is miles apart from that song in terms of words and rhythm.
Ebi sings here as though it is Christ who is calling everybody to come to him because ?his yoke is easy and his burden is light.? Jesus goes on to say that he will embrace in his arms those who come to him, take their pain away and give them rest.
Instrumentation is very good on the song, especially with the occasional resonance of the sax (or an instrument that sounds like it) and the guitar. It is a good piece of work.
My personal favourite on this album is the song title ?Pray without Ceasing?. Though it is difficult to place a finger on the style of the song, it comes to the listener like a country music from Shania Twain album.
The difference comes with the words where the singer encourages the listener to get down on their knees to pray in any situation. She quotes scripture to emphasis that the prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
?Use Me? is one hip song on the album. As though the first rendition is not enough she comes back with what she terms tight swing remix of the same song. A London-based rapper Lydee Stewart is featured on the remix with an execution of a good rap. There is a good bassline for both the originator and the remix.
Ebi is married to Pastor Stephen Mensah of the Calvary Charismatic Baptist Church in London with whom she has two children.
She contend that her debut album has brought her to the competitive arena of the gospel music ministry and hopes to be accepted by lovers of the music in Ghana and anywhere that the genre is appreciated.
