Court withdraws bench warrant against electoral commissioner

An Accra High Court on Thursday rescinded a bench warrant it ordered to be issued on May 4 against the Electoral Commissioner and eight others for failing to appear before it in a contempt case.

The court, presided over by Mrs. Vida Akoto- Bamfo, accepted an apology from counsel for the nine persons, Mr Johnny Quarshie-Idun and Mr Kwaku Baah, on behalf of their clients for their inability to attend court on that day.

The court deliberated on the case in the judge's chambers with the attorneys.

The substantive case of contempt proceedings brought against the nine persons by Mr Thomas Nuako Ward-Brew, an Accra legal practitioner, has been slated for hearing on June one.

Mr Ward-Brew had stated that although the nine persons knew that there were two legal suits pending in court over the congress of the Democratic People's Party (DPP), they went ahead to supervise the onduct of the congress in 1997.

Five out of the nine contemnors were present in court. Those absent were said to be out of town on national assignments.

Those present were Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Djan, Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Professor Ernest Dumor, Miss Elizabeth Solomon and Mr K. Arhin, all of the EC, and Mr Daniel Markin of the DPP.

Absent were Mr D.K Kangah, Deputy Chairman, Operations, Mr Safo Kantanka, Deputy Chairman, and Madam Theresa Cole, member, all of the EC.
