Oh what a night! Durban overflowed with stars from different corners of the world, all there to attend the 2005 KORA All Africa Music Awards.
Created by KORA Entertainment, Kora All Africa Music Awards serves as the South African alternative to Grammy Awards, which also helps salute the wide genre of music and honour the best amongst the rest with a well-shaped trophy.
This is one of the few award shows, which honours music celebrities, and will remain the favourite of the world.
This year’s event was held amidst cheers and high celebration at the beautiful province in Durban Kwa- Zulu Natal.
In fact, what was going through the minds of most Ghanaians was to see either Praye or Tagoe Sisters take home the Best Group from Western Africa award.
The time we were all waiting for came when the winner of that category was about to be announced. “The Best Group from Western Africa award goes to?? Praye”.
It was a night of glamour and glitz as Praye, the sensational group in Ghana was adjudged the Best Group from Western Africa.
Competing with music greats like Tagoe Sisters also from Ghana, Styl Plus and Bantu all from Nigeria, and Leg Def from Guinea for the same award, it was indeed a tough one but as they say, “if you are good, nothing can stop you from being recognised as the best”.
Speaking to Ghana Music.com, this is what they had to say “Our first thanks goes to the Almighty God for seeing us through. Secondly, we thank our producer Mr Sarfo Abebrese and wife Mrs Elizabeth (LISARF) for caring for us as parents do. To our respective parents, Ghana Music.com, Nescafe, Mr Sam Jonah, STB Mcann, Top Dogg, OM Studios and all our fans for being supportive. We are grateful”.
South African artistes netted awards in four categories but the organisers are under pressure from local newspapers for using public funds to organised an event which was not well patronised.
The 10th annual award ceremony was hosted by Benin's Angelique Kidjo and American reggae artist Shaggy.
Veteran South African jazz man Hugh Masekela was among the artists from the host country who won awards, taking the prize of best male artist in Southern Africa.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo took the best traditional group award, while fellow South Africans Malaika were judged best group from Southern Africa.
Nigeria's 2 Face Idibia bagged the award for Revelation of the Year.
The Best African American Diaspora Artist went to US rapper Will Smith for his song Switch.
Expect Ghana music.com to bring you an interview and pictures from the award winning group Praye as soon as they get back to Ghana.
