Second African Folk Music Festival launched in Accra

The second African Folk Music Festival, which seeks to restore and promote indigenous folk music in the sub region, was launched in Accra on Wednesday.

The festival, expected to bring together indigenous folk music performers from different cultural backgrounds in the sub region to share their music and experience on one platform comes off on March 28, 2008, at the University of Ghana campus.

Participating countries are Burkina Faso, Benin, Cote d’ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Mali and Togo

The festival was instituted by the University of Ghana’s Department of Archaeology and the Legon Archaeology Students Association last year.

Speaking at the launch, the Head of the Archaeology Department, Dr.Kodzo Gavua, explained that the festival is to help the department to trace the history behind folkloric music and find out how its lyrics communicated the people’s way of life and culture.

He expressed concern about the loss of rich African folk music.
