Wa (Upper West Region), 16 Nov. 1998 -- Dr Abubakari Alhassan, Central Committee member of the Convention Party (CP), has said that the activities of the Reform Movement within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is a clear signal of the disintegration of that party and urged all Nkrumaists within it to return to their roots by joining the CP. He said from all indications President Rawlings does not want to relinquish power and because he is being impeded by the Constitution to stand for another term, he has single-handedly endorsed Vice-President Mills as the NDC's flag bearer for the 2000 elections to ensure that he continues to rule the country from the "back door" . Dr Alhassan said this when he addressed the Upper West interim executive members and supporters of the CP at a meeting at Wa over the weekend. He, however, assured the President of his safety after he has handed over power and appealed to Parliament to make it its pre- occupation to ensure that he was comfortably resettled and provided the necessary security after his tenure of office. He announced that CP will go to its national delegates congress in March next year to elect its leaders and urged particularly the Peoples National Convention to reconsider its stand on the United Nkrumaist Front as represented by the CP and join them to wrestle power from the NDC in the 2000. Alhaji Ibrahim Mahama, a leading member of the party said after the national congress, all the party's regional and constituency offices will be provided with the necessary funds and logistics to enable them carry out their campaign. Hajia Fati Seidu Dagarti, Central Committee member of the party asked people to disabuse their minds that CP government will relegate northerners to the background in national affairs, pointing to the presence of important northern personalities in the party. She asked women to get actively involved in active politics since it is they and their children, who suffer most when bad policies are implemented by an incompetent government.
