When the death of David Laryea Afortey also known as Apor, the chief executive of Prince Dave Group of Companies broke out some few weeks ago, it was unexpected and shocking. It was seems like nobody was preparing for it or expecting it, at least not now. It was shock all over, especially with his family and friends who were with him when he was taken ill and finally died at the Trust Hospital Osu.

Perhaps the only person who was not shock was himself. This is because his pronouncements prior to his demise were a clear manifestation of what was going to happen to him.

Even though he was not himself as his chronic ailment-jaundice, he was very active and working even though some of us thought he needed some rest, none of us thought of death for him. As a family source revealed to Weekly Fylla “ as we were rushing him to the hospital the man continue to encourage and kept faith in the Lord, by saying we shouldn’t cry since he was not going to die. He was even more than fit and stable”

So the question still remains: what might have caused his death? As usual a lot of meaning have been read into it but this writer after second thought seems to agree with people who think “there was something in it” as we say in our local parlance.

There are few questions Weekly Fylla wants to ask: Is it true that the land he went to work on at the Shinning Beach is a litigation land? Who sold that land to him? Why is it that within a matter of weeks Thursday 21st June to Thursday 5th July 2007 when he started working on the land he met his untimely death? Is there any coincident?

Why is that one of the masons was attacked by a strange ailment and Apor too vomited blood on the same land before he was taken to hospital? Lastly why was he calling a particular friend’s name who allegedly sold the land to him and said later that the person want to kill him? All these and other matters have brought a deep anxiety that permeating the very inner-circle of the feuding family and friends who couldn’t believe in what had struck them.

So did Apor know of his death? This is because events before his death seem to suggest that he might probably be aware of it. Take for instance the pictures he took with his children and close friends and family people on that momentous Sunday 1st July. It was alleged, after taken the pictures that he told those around that “this” person want to kill him.

Also when he was told not to step at Nungua until he is asked to do so, he rather returns to Nungua on the same day. What about the numerous dreams and visions he was told of? Why didn’t he react? “Ensem bebree” (apologize to Kofi Kum Bilson)

Meanwhile, tributes have started pouring in from well-wishers all over. The former President Flt Lt. JJ Rawlings and his entourage were at the village to extend their condolences to the bereaved family at the Kantamanso. Also the President of Musician Union of Ghana, Alhaji Sidiku Buari, his PRO Clement, Goodies, Hon ET Mensah, Mr. Freddy Annan of Base Management UK, delegation from Togo among others have thronged the rather calm village to sympathize with the family.

The Kantamanso town has been turned into a tourist attraction with tens of hundred of mourners visiting the town everyday to sympathize with the family. Last Tuesday for instance when the family met to fix a date for the funeral the place was jammed to capacity and can passed for any body’s funeral grounds. This show of solidarity goes a long way to prove how popular and important the man was.

This is how Goodies put it “It was sad to hear of the death of this young nobleman. His contribution to the music industry and to mankind is unequalled, unparallel and great. I will forever remember him,”

This was how also other musicians and entertainers like Jay Q a renowned sound engineer, 4X4, Castro, Paa Tee the former national dancer, Kwabena Kwabena, Koo Ofori, Abeiku Santana, Pope Skinny, K. K. Fosu were all devastated by the death of Apor as most of them were seen weeping on controllable.

…Castro and 4×4 sing for him

In another development Castro together with 4×4 have released a single album in memory of their boss. The final funeral rite will be held on 17th-18th August at Kantamanso with the details to be released to the press soon.

If there is any lesson to be learned from this death then is the unity of purpose it has brought to the family especially the two wives who are now more sisters than rivals. Those close to him have also leant something about those we deal with and how we should use our time judiciously as Apor at the tender age of 44 have been able to achieve and done so much.

He vibrated with zeal, confidence and lived a life that was simply lavish and prepares to share the little he has with anybody. And as Bob Marley put it “somebody eat and drink with you…. is only your friend who knows your secret and it is he who will reveal.
