Africa Golden Glove Warriors Amateur Boxing continues to thrill

Amateur fight action returned to the outskirts of the Prisons Canteen, Osu in Accra last Friday night as another weekly edition of the Africa Golden Glove Warrior organized competition aimed at nurturing end enhancing boxing talents took centre stage.

Backed by a huge and ecstatic crowd who cheered throughout as if it was the world title at stake, Friday’s tournament witnessed a seven-bout thriller which was preceded by an exhibition by exciting juveniles.

The idea of tapping boxers and developing them from an early age in adherence to imbibing recently instituted International Amateur Boxing (AIBA) rules, Gideon Quartey, President of Africa Golden Glove Warrior says the programme they have supervised for over ten years and which has produced some of Ghana’s renowned boxers, is chalking more successes.

“The fights have improved and the boxers are fighting very well so we are seeing good competitive fights. It’s a good sign and the crowd tells you people like the sport. Amateur is the engine room of professional boxing so there is no doubt how important it is for us to get serious with amateurs,” Mr. Tetteh told www.sportsinghana.com exclusively.

In the event on Friday May 24, 2013, Robert Quaye of the Wisdom Gym claimed unanimous points’ decision victory over Aziz Quartey of the Black Panthers Gym in their Welterweight showpiece fight of the night.

In other bouts, Freeman Kpodo of Ashaiman won via technical knockout against Ali Shaibu of Wisdom Gym in a Welterweight clash, Bayile Negro Twins of Fit Square Gym beat Moses Mole of Akotoku by split points at Lightweight whilst Reformers’ Emmanuel Bawowe proved too strong for Robert Effa winning their Middleweight contest by a unanimous decision.

Also a winner was Sheriff Quaye who beat Nii-Ofoli Tetteh on unanimous points in a Lightweight championship, young Theophilus Tetteh and peer, Moses Amon settled for a draw after three hot rounds of their Flyweight event and Anam Kutsoice earned a walkover Musah Rahman Lawson in their scheduled Catchweight contest.

“2016 is just around the corner and time for another Olympics and I can tell you many nations around the world have already started getting their boxers ready. We believe we have to support amateur boxing because there can be no professional boxing without the foundation boxers get during amateur days,” warned Gideon Quartey who also doubles as Chairman of Dade Boxing Promotions.

The fight action continues again this coming Friday and indeed every Friday night at the Prisons Canteen, Osu beginning 7pm prompt.
