Agbeko confident in Bombers’ London 2012 medal hopes

Ex world champion Joseph King Kong Agbeko remains steadfast in his belief that the current members of the national amateur boxing team, Black bombers, can win medals for Ghana in the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Agbeko was among the spectators at the Bridge Boxing Gym in Accra last Saturday as the Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation (GABF) staged justifiers to select which boxers will qualify to compete for the nation at Africa’s Olympic Games qualifying tournament slated for Casablanca, Morocco from April 27 to May 6.

In the event, Abdul Wahid (Light Flyweight), Samuel Addo (Bantamweight), Jessie Lartey (also Bantamweight), Benjamin Lamptey (Lightweight), Emmanuel Bawowe (Welterweight), Lerrone Richards (Middleweight) and Joshua Buatsi (Light Heavyweight) beat their respective opponents to edge closer to making the Black Bombers squad for the Morocco championship.

Their performances left Agbeko impressed and the former Black Bomber is urging renewed government support to the team as he predicts a bright future for them.

“I think they are doing well, very impressive. Everybody is pushing, working hard and I think they are doing very well. It’s hard to become a world champion but we have the potential,” Agbeko exclusively told ALL SPORTS.

The immediate past IBF Bantamweight champ added: “Looking at the picture during our time is different so I can’t really compare but these guys are good.

“They need support from the government like it was during my amateur days and it will really push them. They need more competition and also more recognition.”
