Accra, August 2, GNA - Joseph "the Fresh King' Agbeko re-launches his career when he mounts the ring in Las Vegas on Thursday, August 9 to challenge Fidencio Reyes of the US in a super bantamweight warm up fight.
The fight, which will take place at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino will be the first for the Ghanaian in US rings and his first in two years after his career was stalled by a managerial dispute and lack of credible opponents in Africa and Europe. Twice, the former ABU champion travelled to the UK and returned to Ghana without fighting, as fights made for him had to be cancelled at the eleventh hour.
Speaking to the GNA Sports on telephone from Bronx in New York, Agbeko said he was very much enthused about the chance to fight in the US and promised to make the best out of the opportunity. He said he had not got any detailed information on his opponent but was sure to end the fight within the distance to announce his arrival and readiness for bigger challenges.
Agbeko said he was grateful to Joshua Clottey for linking him up with his current manager, Vincent Scolpino who has made it possible for him to return to the ring after a long lay off.
He said one reason why he was determined to stop Reyes was to pay the American back for beating Alex Ali Baba in 2005, adding that he showed no respect to Alex who is his senior in boxing.
The former ABU champion said he was training hard with a challenge to the WBC champion, Valdimir Soredencko in mind.
"I want to avenge my defeat to Soredencko because I felt I was robbed in that fight and now that he is sitting pretty on the main throne, I want to have my pound of flesh," he said.
He called on his fans to pray fro his as he begins another page in his career so that he would achieve his world title goal. Agbeko has a fight record of 24 fights, winning 22 by way of knockout and losing one to Soredencko in a disputed decision.
