Alex Brew wants title fight

Accra, Jan 6, GNA - With a record of nine wins, a draw and a loss in 11 professional fights as a lightweight boxer, Alex Brew feels he is the ultimate choice for a shot at the vacant national title.

The hard-hitting pugilist told the GNA Sports on Thursday that he was peeved when promoters who proposed a national title fight between Bilal Mohammed and Ben "Congo Soldier" Ankrah ignored him.

He said it was by divine providence that the fight did not come on as Bilal was reported sick and unable to fight because the fight would have produced an unworthy champion.

The boxer said by his record, he was the most credible contender to the national title and should have been the first choice for a national title fight.

Brew, who is the product of Attoh Quarshie Gymnasium at James Town in Accra said in order for Ghana to have a worthy lightweight champion, he should be matched against either Bilal or Ankrah to decide who wears the crown.

He said a national title fight would offer him the opportunity to arrive on the big stage to chase international belts, which would give him fame and wealth.

"I have been training very seriously to keep in shape to be able to deal with any challenge that comes my way and I shall not disappoint my fans when the chance comes," the boxer said.

Brew whose only loss in his professional career was to Raymond Narh said he was ripe enough to reverse the decision against Narh if he had the chance to meet him again.

He praised his coach Godwin Dzanie Kotey, popularly known in boxing circles as Alloway for straightening the rough edges of his technique and tactics, adding that he had matured into a crack boxer from the novice that lost to Narh.

He asked his fans to maintain faith in him, as he was poised to win titles and emulate Ghana's boxing greats, Azumah Nelson and Ike Bazooka Quartey.
