Ghana’s undisputed greatest boxer Azumah ‘Zoom Zoom’ Nelson has congratulated new world champion Isaac ‘The Royal Storm’ Dogboe on annexing the WBO Super Bantamweight belt.
Dogboe beat American Jessie Magdaleno last Saturday to become Ghana’s newest world champion, and, more significantly, the youngest ever at 23 years.
The 2012 Olympian stopped the hitherto undefeated title holder in Round 11 at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
“I watched with excitement and pride how you demonstrated bravery, determination and resilience against an undefeated Champion Jessie Magdaleno in his country and more importantly not allowing judges to decide the outcome of the bout but letting your ferocious fists decide,” Azumah Nelson, a three-time world champion, said in a statement on Sunday, April 29.
“That has been my philosophy which I have shared with you, that is, going into the ring with your own judges and referee.”
Dogboe has always regarded Azumah Nelson as his role model and aims at cementing his place in boxing just like the legendary sports personality did.
But Azumah had an admonition for the youngster: “The real challenge starts from today as he has become the target of all boxers seeking this belt.
“Dogboe has to train harder than he did before this fight, continue to respect his team and honour the God who made him the Champion and I promise him he will do greater things.”
The ‘Boxing Professor’ acknowledged how proud Ghanaians are with the latest feat in world boxing.
“So [Dogboe] must work harder to make them happy.”
Azumah Nelson commended the Ghana Boxing Authority in the statement and singled out its president,Peter Zwennes, “for the support he offered the Dogboe team and urges Ghanaians to continue to pray and support the new Champion as he continues his pursuit for boxing greatness”.
