Azumah going to WBC Convention

One of the great former world champions Azumah "the professor" Nelson will be attending the World Boxing Council (WBC) Convention which officially opens on Monday, November 12.

The 49 year old Nelson, one of the all-time greats from Ghana and arguably the best fighter to come out of Africa was featherweight champion from 1984-1988 and junior lightweight champion from 1988-1994 and then again from 1995-1997. He ended his career with a record of 39-5-2 with 28 knockouts. He lost the WBC super featherweight title to Jesse James Leija on May 7, 1993 by a unanimous decision.

Known as "The Professor" Nelson later fought Genaro Hernandez for the title on March 22, 1997 and dropped a split decision. He then moved up to lightweight and once again battled Leija for the vacant crown and dropped a unanimous decision on July 11, 1998 in San Antonio, Texas. It was his last fight.

During his career Nelson defeated such greats as Wilfredo Gomez and Jeff Fenech of Australia over whom he won by an eighth round TKO.
