The Black Bomber's arrived in Libreville Gabon on the 5th August 2003 for a tournament organized by the Gabonese Boxing Federation named The Golding Glove, about 7 countries were originaly invited but Ghana, Benin, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Gabon the host country took part, Nigeria, Togo and Cameroon couldn't participate.
The four day tournament started on the 6th of August 2003 at 5.15pm instead of 4.00pm, a day which look very black to the few Ghanaian spectator's who watched the marches. On a layman's outlook two Ghanaian 54kg Lartey Laryea who perform very well but finaly the points were awarded to his Gabonese opponent. the samething goes to the 64kg Ghanaian boxer.
The Ghanaian third match saw Awinbono KO his opponent on the ground that he will also be robed. The 60kg Awudu perfom very magestically over his Gabonese opponent. The day was not good for the 81kg Paa Kwesi Ankrah. In all Ghana worned two combats and lost three on a decision which was not international standard.
Awinbono which they say being a threat was quickly pilled up with programmes which wasn't internationally accepted, he fought Wednesday evening, Thursday Morning, Thursday Night and Friday Morning. He last the Friday morning fight with the pretest that he was very mush tied and filling feverish.
On the third day of the combat the Ghanaian said wonned all the four combats and the last day Ghana won three out of the four combat.
Ghana presented five boxers and won 2 instead of 3 gold 2 silvers and 1 bronze medals. There was a technical controvesial issue about the distribution of the medal, Awinbono, who combats 4 fights and won 3 and his Gabonese counterpart who combats 2 fights one walkover and one lost was awarded the gold medals.
Meanwhile theGabonese won the overall trophy which was not correct to me because the produced 19 boxers to that of Ghana 5 boxers. benin 4 boxers and DRC 5 boxers.
The order came these way. Gabon, Ghana, Benin and DRC.
Though we the Ghana side has saw injustice in the overall activities we hope The Abuja African Games will correct the Gabonse authorities that cheating for their boxers at home is only away of putting them on a wrong side.
