Commey wins IBF Africa Lightweight title

The flamboyant and relishing Ghanaian, Richard Commey is now the undisputed King of the Lightweight division in Africa after he managed to silence the hard hitting swagger, Bilal Mohammed knocking him out in round 7 of their much talked about scheduled 12-rounder on Friday night at the Will Power Gym in Accra.

It was an accelerating bout from the very moment the two boxers stepped into the ring and were motioned to start action by referee Roger Barnor, they started to spit fire like two hungry dragons. It was young Commey however who gradually appeared to have the edge over veteran Bilal as the fight progressed.

Sensing danger, Bilal went in for the kill as he dashed from his corner with his eyes trained on Commey’s forehead throwing smashing straight jabs. That Bilal meant business was evident as he swayed his magic body around the ring going after his prime target (Richard’s head).

Bilal Mohammed however met his match in Richard Commey as he managed to counter all of Bilal’s aggressive punches and drive his lethal ones which left the veteran vulnerable for the kill before dropping him to the canvas twice in the fourth round.

It was round seven that determined the future and perhaps any chance of a rematch between the two phenomenon boxers when Richard connected his lethal jabs and upper cuts to Bilal’s head to settle the score before sending down for the third time. Although Bilal managed to recollect himself and stood up on his wobbling legs, referee Barnor stepped in to stop the fight 2 minutes, 30 seconds into the seventh round.

This was one of the most accelerating boxing bouts in Ghana this year and much more is expected to come when the King of the Lightweight division engage another boxer for his defense in June this year.

The tournament was supervised by Onesmo Ngowi from Tanzania who doubles as the IBF President for Africa, Middle East and Persian Gulf and British Commonwealth Boxing Council (CBC). The referee of course was Roger Barnor of Ghana whilst the judges were: Shadrack Acquaye, Erasmus Owoo and May Mensah Akakpo, all also of Ghana.
