*The Homowo Boxing Bonanza under the auspices of the Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association (GAABA) for amateur boxers in all weight categories returns to Bukom this Sunday August 14 with the first in a series of five for 2011. *

The competition targeted by GAABA to unearth and keep their amateur boxers in shape for all future tournaments will this year extend to include Nungua and Tema following the huge success of last year’s event which only took in Bukom, Osu and Teshie.

According to George Lamptey, 1st Vice President of GAABA, the association are grateful for the support they enjoyed last year from MPs like Hon. Nii Nortey Dua, Hon. Nii Tackie Kommey (MP for Odododiodio) as well as Hon. Nii Lantey Vanderpuije, AMA, Accra Breweries (Castle Milk Malt) and M&J Pharmaceuticals, and is praying for more of such support to make this year’s event another success.

The GAABA 1st Vice President also discloses that the Homowo Boxing Bonanza is actually a preparation towards the annual Amateur Boxing League which will start in October. He indicated that the league will be held on Fridays twice every month with the bid to get the actual Greater Accra Amateur team.

“After the Homowo festival we will start the annual amateur league to keep the boxers in shape for all tournaments. We are therefore inviting all boxers to come and participate because there will be attractive rewards for the winners,” Mr. Lamptey told *SportsInGhana.com.*

Backing him is the 2nd Vice President of GAABA Hon. Wallace Nii Tackie-Komme who has praised the efforts last year’s best boxers from the Homowo Boxing Bonanza for doing extremely well for Greater Accra at the recent National Unity Games.

6 gold, one silver and a bronze from a total of ten available categories was the return for GAABA’s boxers, easily topping the boxing competition.

“At least it’s okay because we even loaned out some of our boxers to other regions and it is these our own boxers who won the categories we did not win. We are proud of our boxers and we hope we can identify and unearth more of such talent this year,” Hon. Tackie-Komme stated.
