The Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association (GAABA) will this year intensify their programmes to identify and nurture budding boxing talents for ultimate benefit of the nation.
SportsInGhana.com understands that the association which last year effectively staged the Homowo Boxing extravaganza, will this year extend it into a league for amateur boxers in the region to be launched by the middle of February.
According to Hon. Wallace Nii Tackie-Komme, 2nd Vice Chairman of GAABA, last year’s Homowo tournament which encompassed 3 staged competitions in Ga-Mashie, Osu and Teshie was very successful with 13 boxers in different weight categories selected for the Greater Accra team.
This he says, is the motivation behind the new plan to organise a league for amateur boxers in the region for the first time ever. “We think the league will be very useful to select more boxers which will be of benefit to the national team since Greater Accra provides most boxers. We also hope to by the middle of the year invite other West African countries like Togo, Benin, Nigeria and others to give our amateur boxers exposure and competition,” Hon. Nii Tackie-Komme has told SportsInGhana.com.
The GAABA Vice Chairman confesses his affection for the fistic sport, why in addition to his busy schedule as Assemblyman for the Shiabu Electoral Area of the Ablekuma South constituency in Accra, he still manages two boxers. That is why he is keen to invite Ghana’s top companies to extend their sponsorships and support of sport to boxing to help curb the incessant little financing and its resultant lack of logistics, equipment and facilities.
“I really like boxing very much so I just want to help promote boxers. The main problem with the development of the sport is lack of sponsorship and secondly logistics like gloves, gyms and other equipment. So we are ready to do business with any companies that are interested in supporting boxing,” Wallace Nii Tackie-Komme appealed.
