Greater Accra amateur boxers to get busy

Accra, Feb. 15, GNA - A three day boxing bonanza involving amateur clubs in the Greater Accra Region gets underway at the premises of City Engineers at James Town on Wednesday, February 22 and runs till Friday, February 24.

The competition, which will feature boxers from about 24 gymnasia in the Region, will afford the organizers the opportunity to identify and select talents to form the nucleus of a new regional team.

Speaking to the GNA Sports on Wednesday, Napoleon Tagoe, Technical Director of the Will Power Boxing Gym whose outfit is organizing the competition in collaboration with the Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association (GAABA) said prizes for the winners have been donated by Nii Tackie Commey, MP for Odododiodo Constituency.

He said about 18 clubs have so far registered to participate in the tournament, while six more gyms had indicated their willingness to compete.

The organizer named some of the gyms as Attoh Quarshie, Black Panthers, Bukom Club, Billy Kotey Gym, Akotoku Academy, Lotto Gold Boxing Club, Star Boxing Club, Sagacious Boxing Gym and Fit Square Boxing Club.

Other clubs, which had confirmed their participation include Jones Boxing Club, Osu Boxing Club, Phoenix Boxing Gymnasium, Sparta Club and Pakis Boxing Club. Boxers for the competition will weigh in at 7 a.m. of the fight days, while the tournament starts at 2 p.m. each day.
