This year’s annual Ga Homowo Festival Boxing tournament comes off at the Gbese Mantse Palace, opposite Ussher Fort in the heart of Accra on Saturday and Sunday.
Amateur boxers registered with the Greater Accra Amateur Boxing Association (GAABA) will engage each other in battling encounters from bantamweight right up to heavyweight as 14 exciting fight matches are set to thrill fight fans as part of the Homowo festival of the Ga people.
The competition is held in collaboration with Accra Municipal Authority (AMA) and GAABA. The Mayor of Accra, Nii Oko Vanderpuye and traditional rulers such as the Gbese Mantse, Nii Ayibonte are expected to grace the ringside.
Hon. Wallace Nii Tackie-Komme, Chairman of GAABA, the regional amateur boxing controlling body said they will also use the occasion to select boxers to make up the GAABA team that will travel to an international tournament in Canada next month.
He urged boxers who would be featured to give off their best and be selected into the regional team and possibly the national team as the region has always dominated the Black Bombers.
The boxers would be drawn from gyms like Discipline, Akotoku, Bukom, Sonia, Black Panthers, Chorkor, Mamprobi, Atukpai and James Town.
Napoleon Abbey of Will Power Gym said the programme is ideal and all the local coaches have embraced it. He called on other corporate bodies to support the game.
