Freddy Lawson knocks out African Assassin to win first fight in USA
Ghana’s International Boxing Federation (IBF) Africa and International Welterweight champion Frederick Lawson brought some smiles to the faces of Ghanaian boxing fans when he lived up to his pre-fight pledge to stop Uganda born American Mohammed Kayongo in the soxth round at The Myth, Maplewood, Minnesota, USA last Saturday night .
Lawson who is the only Ghanaian to have won an international bout until recently improved his 100% career record to 22 fights following his very impressive stoppage of Ugandan born American, Mohammed Kayongo also called the African Assassin.
The Ghanaian from Bukom in Accra dominated throughout in his maiden fight in the United States that the 33 year old Kayongo gave up after round 5, failing to answer the bell for round 6 to give referee Mark Nelson no choice than to award the Ghanaian nicknamed Okumka a round 6 TKO victory.
Lawson said “I opened fire on him and he was sweating, I opened my AK 47 attack on him right from round one and never looked back. In the 5th round I knocked him down and the referee counted him, when he stood up he started roaming in the ring like he was mad. The bell saved him but he didn’t return,”.
“A fight is a fight and I have only two options in the ring, get serious and work hard so that’s just what I did.
“I was far away from my home, far away from my city so all I got was to concentrate and work hard. I know where I’m from, I don’t joke in the ring, I’m serious,” Lawson added.
The Ghanaian rising star who spars with the legendary Manny Pacquiao is concentrating on the real task ahead as he maintains the push to get into world championship reckoning under the tutelage of Coach Joseph Awinongya at their Chicago base.
“Probably next month we have another fight so we fly out to Chicago to start training again. Tell Ghanaians to keep on praying for me and expect something big from me in a year and half. I keep on working hard for Ghana,” Lawson said.
Lawson was in strong contention for the 2013 Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Professional Boxer of the year but was edged out due to experience by Patrick Allotey and aspiring Commonwealth champion, Richard Commey. Allotey who boasted of 30 undefeated outings was named the best boxer, but Lawson is not perturbed as he knows the future is very bright and he is hopeful of winning a world title soon.
