Former national middleweight champion Mohammed Akrong is in Mexico for the biggest fight of his career as he faces local favourite, the legendary Luis Ramon ‘Yori Boy’ Campas, for the WBA International Middleweight title this Saturday over 10 rounds at the Gimnasio Municipal, Navojoa, Sonora, Mexico.
28 year old Akrong, 12-3 (9 KOs), has claimed two straight victories since losing his Ghana Middleweight belt to Aryee Ayittey back in March, the latest being a 7th round knockout of Solo Adama only last month, and expects the winning momentum to power him to victory over the much experienced ‘Yori Boy’ Campas, 98-15-1 (77 KOs).
39 year old Campas is a veteran of 114 professional fights, who debuted nineteen years ago, has faced some of best including Felix Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya, Fernando Vargas, Raul Marquez and Hector Camacho and also previously held the IBF Light Welterweight title.
But Ghanaian Akrong, popularly called Asua Lee, sees this as his best chance to announce his name to the big boys of the middleweight division of world boxing.
He says victory over ‘Yori Boy’ Campas is a must “because it will open many doors for me. I urge Ghanaians all over the world to remember me in their prayers and I promise to bring back the title,” Akrong told * SportsInGhana.com* earlier this week before flying out for the fight.
