“Operation Win Gold” declares GABF President

Gideon Quartey, President of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation (GABF) has declared “Operation Win Gold” for the national boxing team, the Black Bombers not to go to Congo as tourists, but boxers with a mission of winning either gold, silver or bronze medals.

Speaking after the special boxing justification tournament at the Accra Sports Stadium, he said Ghana has always won with boxing and boxing remains the hope of the nation so they cannot afford to take chances.

“We did not start our preparations well on time, but we have a standing team and we organised the tournament to allow others to come in and justify themselves for everyone to see that we have open our doors for everybody who is a good boxer and can box for Ghana” he said.

According to Gideon Quartey, they are now undertaking none residential camping to keep the Bombers in shape before they go into real camping.

He expressed that the boxers who have been selected are very good and if they take instructions well, they can be better, however if they are committed and disciplined as expected, they will reach the medal zone.

Gideon Quartey who is a keen enthusiast of amateur boxing observed that boxing has always won something for Ghana and they hope to improve upon Maputo, because all the 20 selected boxers are medal hopes.

He hinted that since there are ten weight categories, only ten boxers will represent the nation and those who will be selected cannot miss the medal zone.

The President tasked corporate bodies to visit the training sessions of the boxers and motivate them with incentives, so that they will feel the belonging of the nation called Ghana.

Meanwhile, Coach Ofori Asare who is handling the team said it will not be easy selecting the ten best boxers as all the boxers in camp are very good and want to be part of the squad.

He prayed that the Almighty God will give him the courage and eyes to see and pick the very best boxers.
